LEGITIMATE INJUSTICE

Jonathan Quong initiated the CFCP Workshop series on January 29th, 2020, with a talk on ‘legitimate injustice’. Quong explored a possible explanation of why it might be that we are sometimes obligated to comply with state officials enforcing unjust laws, even though it is really important to do away with unjust laws. The key idea advanced in the discussion was that when there is persistent disagreement in groups about which decisions are the right (or just) ones, then groups of all sizes will inevitably be led to sometimes make the wrong (unjust) decision, and that this has consequences for who bears the burden of being responsible for unjust group choices.
